" Our friend's house and pool in the Hollywood Hills are usually empty during weekdays, so we pop over all the time, ditch our clothes and go for a swim - the pool is always warm and the weather is always nice here.  However, this particular day was eerie.  There was a huge brush fire burning in mountains nearby and it was getting pretty close to the city. Winds were making the fire hard to fight, carrying the ash across the city and raining it down everywhere, including the swimming pool.  It was strange and beautiful and awful all at the same time so we swam naked."

Go:  Take in views of downtown Los Angeles atop The Music Box Steps. Located between Vendome Street and Descano Drive, the spot is named after the 1932 Academy Award-winning Laurel and Hardy film scene where they tried to push a piano up the stairs.

Stay:  If you’re feeling an organic vibe, find your bliss at The Garden Cottage in Beverly Grove. The owners, Ahuva and Bob, are known for their fantastic organic breakfasts served in the garden. Try to get the Terrace Room if you can!

Eat:  Try the avocado sandwich at The Trails Café at the base of the Griffith Observatory trail.

Drink:  For some tropical flavor, hit up Los Angeles’ oldest Tiki bar, Tiki-Ti, and try their signature drink, Ray’s Mistake.
