" I took this shot with a waterproof toy camera on one of several white-sand beaches in Nida, a small Lithuanian resort town and the westernmost point of the Baltic States. The wind was strong, the water was refreshing and my friend was overjoyed jumping in the waves."

Go:  Nida is located within the Curonian Spit, a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its sand dunes. Climb the 52m-high Parnidis Dune, which is the last shifting dune of the isthmus. Both the Curonian lagoon and the Baltic Sea can be seen from the top of the dune.

Stay:  Ask for the deluxe room at the Naglis guesthouse for great views of the sea and an in-room sauna. 

Eat:  Smoked eel is the most mouth-watering local specialty.

Drink:  Chilled local wheat beer, "baltas alus" in Lithuanian, with a slice of lemon
